METRO MANNA
The Birth of METRO MANNA:
Two Police Officers responded to a call of child neglect in the inner-city. Upon arrival they found four small children alone in a small apartment. They looked around to find the refrigerator and cabinets empty. A few minutes later the mother arrived from work. In tears explained she was trying to be a good mother. She can’t draw welfare because she has a job, but she can’t afford childcare, bus fare, rent and food on her minimum wages. She lives day to day spending whatever she makes to buy an evening meal along with milk & a box of cereals for the kids in the morning. The two officers, moved with compassion, went out and spent their own money to buy food for her cupboards. This is not a hypothetical situation. This is a true story with a real family, real police officers and true compassion..
After hearing of this a few of years ago, I thought . . . "Why can’t we provide a place where Police Officers and Firefighters can obtain food for families they encounter on their patrol?"
A way officials could help families without creating their own financial burden? After all how many more officers would help out if it didn't depend on them using their own funds? Not only could we help families begin to make ends meet, but at the same time help build bridges between Denver’s Peace & Safety Officials and the community.
After two years of prayer, negotiating, planning and waiting on the Lord, METRO MANNA became a reality! About 1,000 square feet of office and warehouse space was donated to Cross & Clef Ministries by The Bedroom Superstore.
A food bank dedicated exclusively for the use of the metro areas’ Police Officers and Fire Fighters. We were excited to begin this new and unique aspect of Cross & Clef Ministries. . . A whole new way of ministering Jesus to Denver’s Hungry, Hurting & Homeless. .
METRO MANNA moved into THE TOLLGATE COFFEEHOUSE in 2000 but then was forced to close after September 11th 2001. We again opened METRO MANNA at The Tollgate Seattle as a Food Bank for the homeless youth in The University District. It is our desire to reopen METRO MANNA in Denver's Capitol Hill within the next few months.
METRO MANNA is an important part of Cross & Clef Ministries and I am excited to see how The Lord will use it to bring people into relationships with him.
My heart cries out for those who are without. Yesterday I was talking with a young lady at church. She said she asked God "How can you allow such poverty to continue?" His response was, "How can You allow it to continue?"
I believe this is the exact reason we are on the earth. To minister to "The least of these". . . .
